]]> Female Genital Mutilation FGM involves procedures that include the partial or total removal of the external female genital organs for cultural or other non- therapeutic reasons. The practice is medically unnecessary, extremely painful and has serious health consequences, both at the time when the procedure is carried out and in later life.

The age at which girls’ under go FGM varies enormously according to the community. It can take place when the girl is newborn, during childhood or adolescence, just before marriage or during the first pregnancy. FGM includes procedure that intentionally alter or injure female genital organs for non-medical reasons.

An estimated 100 to 140 million girls and women worldwide are currently living with the consequences of FGM.

The Female Genital Mutilation Act was introduced making FGM illegal in the UK.
